Smoothflow Ducted Laminar Flow Cabinet

Smoothflow Ducted Laminar Flow Cabinet provides operator and process protection in areas where a metal-free environment is critical to the process.

The Smoothflow Ducted Laminar Flow Cabinet (DLFC) unit is designed and manufactured for use in laboratories where both process and operator protection is required in a metal-free or corrosive environment. The Smoothflow DLFC unit to this end is unique in its design and manufacture and does not comply strictly to a single Australian Standard, rather particular sections of several Australian Standards.

The Unit, although unique, is designed in keeping with accepted industry standards. The class 2 label given to the unit is an internationally accepted for a cabinet that offers operator and process protection (see diagram below). The Australian Standard AS/NZS 2252.2 Safety in Laboratories: Laminar Flow Biological Safety Cabinets (Class II) offers a good reference standard in terms of the mechanical performance criteria for the Smoothflow DLFC unit to follow. However this standard is not an acceptable standard in terms of unit construction and installation. For example, AS/NZS 2252.2 for biological safety cabinets nominates series 300 stainless steel as the internal construction material obviously not practical for the metal-free or corrosive environments.

The Smoothflow class 2 hybrid unit is also in part a ducted exhaust system and has elements to the installation that are not covered by the AS/NZS 2252.2. These elements are covered in AS/NZS 2243.8; Safety in laboratories- Fume Cupboards. Once again, the relevant sections of this standard have been adopted as a guide for best practice for installation of duct, fan and stack system.

The HEPA filter(s) in each Smoothflow class 2 hybrid unit should be tested by NATA certified testing authority using test methods outlined in the Australian Standard(s) AS/NZS 1807 series.

There is no single Australian Standard for this style of hybrid cabinet and can therefore not be tested or fully comply with one single standard. The number of these units produced annually is so small that the demand for an individual relevant standard has never been required. The Smoothflow class 2 hybrid unit installations are installed using AS/NZS 2243.8 as a guide to installation and AS/NZS 2252.2AS/NZS 1807 series as a filter performance guide.
