Smoothflow 2000 Ducted Fume Cupboard

Smoothflow 2000 Ducted Fume Cupboard to be used for operator protection from chemicals and contaminants in laboratory applications

The Smoothflow 2000 Ducted fume cupboard is the new fume cupboard from Laboratory Systems Group. It has been developed in conjunction with users from leading scientific establishments from both Australia and international laboratories.

Exterior:

The Smoothflow 2000 front fascia and side panels are manufactured from white PVC. White PVC offers good general chemical resistance to most chemicals especially corrosives and provides an aesthetic appeal that blend with almost any laboratory colour scheme.

The fascia is manufactured with a proven aerodynamic design that provides smooth and uninhibited air flow into the cupboard. The taper and radius of the sill and mullions minimizes turbulence and dangerous eddying effects. The overall finish of the Smoothflow 2000 is a clean and aesthetically pleasing look without compromising safety and performance.

Sash:

Each Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboard is supplied standard with a 6mm toughened glass counter-balanced sash that is raised and lowered with ease. Even on larger units, the sash moves effortlessly. Every sash comes fitted with the proprietary Smoothflow air foil sash handle that has a radius to enhance the air flow efficacy into the fume cupboard.

The combination sash allows for ease of access to apparatus without the requirement of lifting the entire sash. The benefits of this system is that adjustments can be made to apparatus without disturbing the air flow by lifting the sash, protects the user by still providing facial and body protection (not seen when working with sash fully raised) and a dramatic reduction in conditioned air loss due to decreased face aperature.

Optional Polycarbonate and acrylic sashes are available for fume cupboard applications involving Hydrofluoric acid.

Interior:

The interior design of the Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboard provides a contoured and safe chamber that allows ease of cleaning and eliminates areas where potential chemical and particulate build-up can occur. The toughened glass or optional polymer chamber are fully sealed with radius corners reducing areas for contaminant build-up. All welds are factory tested for integrity to guarantee a full seal.

The Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboard is delivered standard with an integral sump to contain spillages and allow for full wash down in the event of a major spill or during routine maintenance. A unique feature of the Smoothflow 2000 sump is that it provides ventilation under the work surface every time the fume cupboard is on. This feature reduces vapour build up under the work surface if a spill goes unnoticed. Fixed bases without sumps are also available for special application or where a sump is not required.

The inner chamber materials vary depending on the laboratory application. Listed below are our common materials of construction:

Toughened glass clad epoxy coated steel – provides the cleanest and most long-term aesthetic material. Glass provides a high level of chemical resistance and heat tolerance and ease of cleaning.

  • PVC – used for general laboratories and classrooms where only common chemicals are used and minor heating is required (up to 60oC).
  • “Fire-kem” Fire-retardant polypropylene – our proprietary product that has been tested to AS/NZS 1530.3. “Fire-kem” is appropriate where more aggressive chemicals are used and greater heating is required. “Fire-kem”, over PVC, offers a greater tolerance to solvent attack and has an intrinsically higher tolerance to heat (up to 110oC). “Fire-kem” is our premium material of choice especially in fume cupboard being used for acid digestion or trace metal analysis.
  • Stainless Steel – used for fume cupboard applications where aggressive solvents, such as MEK or acetone, are used and where higher heat tolerances are required. Stainless Steel is also utilized in laboratories using radioisotopes where the user requires a smooth seamless finish to eliminate radioactive contamination.
  • Trespa – used for fume cupboards that require higher temperature tolerance than “Fire-kem” but better corrosion resistance than stainless steel. Trespa provides a non-porous and high chemical resistance solid surface that unlike epoxy coated cement sheet, will not absorb moisture or chemicals if the surface is penetrated. Trespa provides equal fire rating to cement sheet when tested to AS/NZS 1530.3.

All materials used in the construction of Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboards are solid, homogenous, non-porous products that do not require a surface coating to provide protection to the inner core. Such products that require a coating, by definition, are inferior to solid core products and if the surface of any of the above materials is scratched or penetrated, then the chemicals resistance and absorption capacity is equal to the surface. Chemical Resistance charts are available for all the above products.

Work-surface:

Of all the fume cupboard materials chosen for construction, the work surface is the most important as it the primary point-of-contact for chemical attack and heat damage. Careful consideration needs to be given to the work surface material as it needs to be suitable for the application especially in fume cupboards that have a fixed base.

It is for this reason, the Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboards are supplied standard with a Trespa solid laboratory grade work surface. Trespa provides the best general purpose material for use with heat and chemicals. However, in laboratories that require specific materials for their application, then many different surfaces are available.

Optional materials are:

  • UPVC
  • "Fire-kem" Fire-retardant polypropylene
  • Stainless Steel
  • Trespa Athlon or Toplab plus
  • Ceramic
  • Polyester resin
  • Vinyl ester resin

Baffles:

Baffle configuration is one of the most important aspects of fume cupboard design. Lab Systems has spent many years designing and testing different configurations to establish one of the most unique baffle systems available on the market. The Smoothflow baffle system provides complete scavenging from low, medium and high levels in the internal chamber as well as scavenging from under the work surface in Smoothflow that have sumped bases.

The quad-level baffle system allows for even air flow throughout the cupboard independent of sash height and has been designed to take into consideration equipment being used in the cupboard. Where spray bars are fitted, the spray system cab wash down the rear of the baffle at any time, even during operation, without water splashing onto the work surface.

The baffles in the Smoothflow 2000 also provide support for laboratory scaffolding without requiring wall or base supports. This feature increases the useable area within the fume cupboard.

Smoothflow Safety Control System:

The Smoothflow 2000 fume cupboard are installed with the new Smoothflow Safety Control System. The new SSCS comes with an LCD screen and easy to use push button control. The controller gives real-time air flow readout (in m/s) and historical data graphs showing alarm log and performance criteria.

The system can be interfaced with all DDC and BAS systems to give fan status, alarm output and 0-10V output for variable air volume (VAV) systems.
